2022 Blues and Golds awards

Congratulations to the winners of the 2022 Blues and Golds Awards.

Golds Awards

Arabella Dudfield ¨C Service Excellence

Arabella has been heavily involved in the advocacy of the rainbow community to achieve greater visibility for LGBTQIA+ students on campus. She has been a pivotal member of SPACE, Lincoln¡¯s LGBTQIA+ club and has planned numerous Pride events for the LGBTQIA+ community. She has also worked with the Canterbury Police Diversity Liaisons to create a safer environment for the rainbow community in Christchurch. She was heavily involved in Lincoln¡¯s Rainbow Crossings project. Through her efforts, Lincoln is the only university in NZ to have a rainbow crossing; a great achievement for the LGBTQIA+ community.

Ben Chambers ¨C Service Excellence

Ben is a member of the Lincoln Volunteer Fire Brigade, with the rank of firefighter.  As a student and resident in Lincoln Township, he is available for emergency events 24/7. Ben's availability during the day and night makes him a valuable member of the brigade and he is third for overall attendance. As a firefighter, he has attended and assisted at more than 100 emergency events over that past 12 months. Many of these emergency events are serious and traumatic for both the firefighters and the other people involved.

Dewi Soegiarto ¨C Cultural Excellence

Dewi is the vice-president of the ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵAPP¹ÙÍø International & Cultural Society Club. She has devoted many hours to planning events and initiatives for ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵAPP¹ÙÍø¡¯s international students, especially during and post-Covid. As a result, international students have had the opportunity to connect with one another, something which has been greatly appreciated by Lincoln¡¯s international students, especially during tough times when they have been away from their families.

Hamish Goatley  ¨C Service Excellence

Hamish is also a member of the Lincoln Volunteers Fire Brigade, with the rank of firefighter. As a student and resident in Lincoln Township he is available for emergency events 24/7.  Hamish's availability during the day/night makes him a valuable member of the brigade and he is eighth for overall attendance.  As a firefighter he has attended and assisted at more than 80 emergency events over that past 12 months.  

Jay McKendrey  ¨C Service Excellence

Jay is an advocate for minority students and has been an active member of Lincoln¡¯s LBGTQIA+ club, SPACE. He has been involved in initiatives raising awareness and facilitating conversation around sexual harm, relationships, consent and identity and is a facilitator for WellMates, a programme on rural mental health and suicide prevention. He has also been part of the organisation team for Chinese Language Week events and the Mental Health Awareness Week events in how food and community plays into wellbeing.

Sahiti Peddisetti- Cultural Excellence

Sahiti is the president ¨C and heart ¨C of the ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵAPP¹ÙÍø International & Cultural Society Club. She has devoted many hours to planning events and initiatives for ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵAPP¹ÙÍø¡¯s international students, ensuring they have a place to connect and support one another, especially during and post-Covid. Sahiti is also an active member of the Student Experience Team at LU, supporting LUSA and wellbeing team events, and has volunteered for the Children's University for the past few years. Outside of university, she is a Shuttle Time coach, organising badminton sessions for beginners, mainly children. She also helps out with tournaments for the Rolleston Badminton Club and Telugu Badminton Canterbury and the Telugu Association of South Island (a South Indian cultural non-profit organisation).

Sophie Williams ¨C Service Excellence

Sophie is co-president of Lincoln¡¯s LGBTQIA+ club, SPACE, and has been heavily involved in the advocacy of the rainbow community to achieve greater visibility for LGBTQIA+ students on campus. She has planned numerous Pride events for the LGBTQIA+ community and has been an active voice for diversity and the rainbow community at both Lincoln and wider Christchurch. She was heavily involved in Lincoln¡¯s Rainbow Crossings project. Through her efforts, Lincoln is the only university in NZ to have a rainbow crossing; a great achievement for the LGBTQIA+ community. In addition, Sophie is a volunteer for StarJam Workshops, where she supports and empowers young people with disabilities.

Vivian Wang ¨C Service Excellence

As the president for LU Parent Society this year, Vivian has arranged a variety of events, including weekly morning tea catch-ups and other group activities for parents at ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵAPP¹ÙÍø. She also works with LUSA, the university, the Puawaitanga ki Otautahi Trust and the Battered Women's Trust where she dedicates her time to providing wellbeing support. Vivian is also an active member of the LU International & Cultural Society, supporting and facilitating events for Lincoln¡¯s international student body and is always keen to help others.

Blues Award ¨C Athletics

Julia Burnham

Julie has competed at both national and international competitions. Her achievements include winning the New Zealand U20 women's 100m hurdles in 2022, winning the silver medal at the New Zealand U20 women's long jump, winning the New Zealand U20 womens 4x100m and winning the bronze medal at the Oceania U20 womens 100m hurdles. She also represented Canterbury at the Jennian homes track and field championships from 2019 ¨C 2022 and represented New Zealand at the 2022 Oceania Championships.

Blues Award ¨C Basketball

Corban Mason

Corban was a member of the Nelson Giants in the NZNBL 2022 Competition. In addition, he is also a member of the ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵAPP¹ÙÍø Premier Basketball team.

Jarred Burnett

Jarred is an NZ National Basketball League player as well as a member of the Canterbury U23 team who competed at the NZ NBL competition.

Kate Herman

Kate made the All Star Five team in the premier club basketball grade, and was also a member of the LU Basketball Team who won the national 3x3 Uni games. She played in U18 girls New Zealand team at Asia Cup in India.

Lauryn Hippolite 

Lauryn is a member of the NZ Women¡¯s Basketball Team and a member of the  Melbourne Boomers WNBL Champions.

Pafe Momoisea

In 2022, Pafe achieved regional representation in the Counties Manukau Jets as the Captain. He was also in the Midcity Magic 3x3 Schick Cup Team and played in the Lincoln Mens Premier Basketball Team.

Rosalia Samia

Rosalia was part of the 3x3 Lincoln Women¡¯s Team that won the Tertiary Nationals 2022 competitions and qualified for the World Tertiary Championships in Turkey at the end of October 2022. Rosalia was also contracted with Whai (Mid-North) Women's basketball team in 2022.

Blues Award ¨C Cricket

Abby Gerken

Abby was awarded a Canterbury Magicians contract, and has been a part of the Canterbury Magicians cricket team. She also represented NZ in the U19s.

Kate Sims

Kate was a member of the 2021 & 2022 Canterbury Women¡¯s Cricket Team, The Magicians, and the NZ XI Women¡¯s Cricket team 2021 - England Tour

Zak Foulkes

In 2022, Zak made is his first class debut playing for Canterbury in the Plunket Shield Cup. His first contract will be coming this season.

Blues Award ¨C Curling

Zoe Harman

Zoe represented NZ in the NZ Youth Olympics and was part of the NZ U21 Curling Team. Amongst her many achievements, she was also selected for the U21 New Zealand curling team every year since 2018 and placed 4th in the New Zealand mixed fours curling championships.

Blues Award ¨C Football

Jasmine Donald

Jasmine was a member of the Nga Wahine Whanapoikiri (NZ Maori Women's Team) and has also played for the premier club team in the Chch league. She was a member of the Canterbury United Pride that competed in NWL and was part of the Pre-University U19 Women¡¯s Team. Jasmine will also be heading over to Turkey at the end of October.

Blues Award ¨C Hockey

Charlie Morrison

Charlie has represented NZ in the U21s competition and is a part of the Canterbury Senior team. He was part of the South team in the 2022 Sentinel Homes North V South U21 Men competition as well as part of the 2022 Ford National Hockey Championship Tier 1 Men¡¯s team.

Ellie Duncan

In 2022, Ellie was a member of the Harewood Hunters who won the Christchurch Premier League competition. She also represented the Otago region at the National Hockey League and ?tautahi Cup 2022.

Louis Beckert

Louis has represented Canterbury for the fifth consecutive year in his chosen sport. So far this year, he has trialled for the NZ Vantage Blacksticks Men's Team and attended the Blacksticks Men's Commonwealth Games Team trial camp. He was also part of the team who won the South Island Super-Six tournament (representing LU).

Sam Lints

Sam has represented Canterbury in the Canterbury Cavs team, and was a member of the U21 NZ Team as well as the SuperCam U21 Team.

Blues Award ¨C Karate

Ella Harris

Ella has achieved numerous accolades in international and national competitions and representative team over the past year. These include: NZ Senior Women's Karate Team - Oceania Champions (1st place), Senior Women's +68kg Kumite Oceania (2nd place), U21 Oceania Women's (3rd place), NZ National Senior Women's Open (3rd place), NZ National U21 Women's (2nd place).

Blues Award ¨C Netball

Charlotte Knight

In 2022, Charlotte achieved regional representation for netball. She is part of the ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵAPP¹ÙÍø A Team, which won the Premier Christchurch Competition. She was also part of the Canterbury Open Representative Team 2022, which placed fifth at the Nationals.

Emily Hargreaves

Emily was a member of the ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵAPP¹ÙÍø A Team, which won the Premiere 1 Christchurch Competition in 2022. She was also part of the Canterbury Open Representative Team 2022, which placed 5th at the Nationals.

Emma Wilkie

Emma was a member of the ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵAPP¹ÙÍø A Team, which won the Premiere 1 Christchurch Competition in 2022. She has also been a member of the Mainland NNL Representative Netball Team.

Blues Awards - Rowing

Matthew White

Matthew was a trans-tasman university rowing team representative competing in Brisbane in 2022. He also won silver medals in the senior pair and the four, with a bronze in the senior eight at the national rowing champs this year.

Will Gilbert

Will won a silver medal in the U23 Men's Coxless Four at the 2022 World U23 Rowing Championship.

Blues Awards - Rugby

Charlie Murray

In 2022, Charlie was a member of the rugby team playing at the NZ Universities competition.

Emma Dermody

Emma was a member of the Canterbury FPC team, Matatu Super Rugby Aupuki squad and the NZ Universities team. She has also been a regional representative for FPC team in 2022 and the Matatu Super rugby squad.

George Bell

George was captain of the Rugby Team who competed at the NZ Universities competition. He is also a member of the Crusaders and the Canterbury A team and NZ U20 sides.

Hannah King

Hannah has been a member of the U18 Canterbury High Performance FPC outer squad and has represented Canterbury in the FPC U18 Competition. She is also a member of the NZ Universities Rugby Team.

Harrison Dakin

Harrison was a member of the New Zealand Universities Rugby Team in 2022. He was also a member of the Canterbury U19 Rugby Team as well as the Cantabrians rugby team.

Jamie Hannah

Jaime was named in the New Zealand U20 men's rugby squad and played in July¡¯s Oceania Cup against Argentina, Fiji and Australia.

Joe Brial

Joe was part of the Canterbury NPC Team in 2022, has represented NZ in the U20 Rugby Competition and is a member of the Rams rugby team.

Lockie McNair

Lockie was a member of the Canterbury Men¡¯s Development Team and played in the NZ Universities competition. He is also a member of the ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵAPP¹ÙÍø Rams team.

Blues Awards ¨C Rugby Union

Karla Wright-Akeli

Karla was part of the Canterbury Women¡¯s FPC team as well as a member of the NZ Universities Womens Rugby Team. She has also been a member of the NZ Condor 7¡¯s team and the Moana Pasifika 7s team.

Blues Awards - Wrestling

Matthew Oxenham

Matthew was part of the New Zealand Wrestling Team competing in Birmingham. He has placed 5th overall at Comm Games, Gold at National Champs, Silver at the Australian National Champs and won Silver at the Australian Cup.

Supreme Awards

The Supreme Awards are the highest accolade, bestowed on the student or team who have achieved significant excellence in their awards category.
