What you will learn

After successfully completing this course, you'll be able to: 

  • Critically examine traditional and contemporary M¨¡ori planning and policy models, frameworks and approaches. 
  • Review major factors and processes that underpin M¨¡ori policy and planning. 
  • Critically analyse key institutional arrangements and texts, such as the Treaty of Waitangi/Te Tiriti o Waitangi 1840, Declaration of Independence 1835 and NZ Constitution Act 1852, as enduring M¨¡ori policy and planning texts. 
  • Advise on knowledge and frameworks as they apply to M¨¡ori planning and policymaking in the public sector (central, regional and local government). 
  • Understand tikaka M¨¡ori and the ethical dimensions of policy and planning in a democratic and market-led economy. 
  • Critique contemporary public policy and planning arrangements for and about M¨¡ori. 
  • Understand and appreciate the challenges of M¨¡ori engagement with the Nation state, in the context of significant power and resource differentials.
