The Chronicle of Higher Education has unveiled a new tool for tracking the into by colleges and universities.

The Chronicle, which released the database over the weekend, says the tracking tool was created in order to help “shed light” on the lengthy process institutions are subjected to once a federal investigation begins.

The publication reports that the number of institutions under investigation has tripled in less than two years. The Chronicle explained the scope of the database:

It includes all investigations in this : those either open now or resolved since April 4, 2011, when the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights issued a “Dear Colleague” letter to resolve students’ reports of sexual assault — and to protect them throughout the process.
