Case Overview

On November 18, 2024, students looking to protest the Israel-Hamas war submitted their plan for a demonstration at Boston College. Despite the school’s Student Demonstrations Policy  three business days of lead time to submit a protest request, it  BC an astounding 80 days to approve the organizers’ request. During this time, BC insisted the organizers submit the exact language for chants and speeches planned for the protest, and vetoed proposed language five times. ݮƵAPP wrote BC on March 6 calling on it to remove its pre-approval requirement for all demonstrations and make clear that event organizers need not submit speech itineraries for administrative approval.
