Lincoln Memorial University College of Veterinary Medicine: College Says Student Violated Policy by Telling Trump Supporters to Unfollow Her Instagram
Cases
Case Overview
On January 20, 2025, Lincoln Memorial University College of Veterinary Medicine student Erin Lintag posted two stories to Instagram: “If you are my classmate and you voted for trump or support his ideals unfollow me. We will still be civil because we have to be, but you dont need me as a friend and I don’t need you[]” and “Another reminder: Trump, Musk, RFK, & etc supporters will get the cold shoulder but if we have to fake it for our grade then we will. But otherwise, UNFOLLOW ME. QUICKLYYYYYYYY[.]” At a January 31 meeting, Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Admissions Elizabeth Devine charged Lintag with “Posting Instagram posts that were targeted at her ‘classmates’” and gave her 48 hours to accept or refuse responsibility. Under pressure from the short deadline and an allegedly hostile meeting with Devine, Lintag reluctantly accepted responsibility on February 4. ݮƵAPP wrote LMU-CVM on February 25, explaining that the high-pressure tactics employed by the college raise serious due process concerns and that the college’s commitment to free speech protects Lintag’s political speech, even if others find it distasteful. ݮƵAPP urged LMU-CVM to remove the violation from Lintag’s file.
