Matthew Harwood is the vice president of FIRE's communications department. He was previously managing director of communications and strategy at the Brennan Center for Justice where he managed the day-to-day operations of its communications department. Prior to Brennan Center, he was managing editor of the American Civil Liberties Union. He began his tenure at the ACLU as a media strategist, handling communications for free speech, national security, and privacy-related issues in Washington, D.C. He worked on the Snowden disclosures and the resulting push for NSA reform. Before working for the ACLU, Harwood was an associate editor at Security Management magazine in Alexandria, Virginia, where he wrote extensively on homeland security matters. He holds a master of letters in international security studies from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. His writing has appeared at Reason, The American Conservative, the Guardian, the Columbia Journalism Review, TomDispatch, C4SS, and the Future of Freedom.
